Indonesia is well known as one of the leading exporter countries for furniture and home decor in the world. From natural rattan indoor to teak outdoor furniture, from coastal to minimalist home décor, from modern to antique style, Indonesia has so many choices for the importers. The top five export destination countries are the USA, Japan, the Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium. With abundant natural resources including numerous varieties of timber, the country has attracted global attention as a furniture manufacturing base for international brands.
The well-grown Indonesian furniture industry cannot be apart from the deforestation issue which becomes the greatest issue nowadays. Did you know the fact that our life is relying much on the forests? As the lung of the earth, forests provide our basic needs such as oxygen, clean water, wood, and many more. However, there is a shocking truth about our forests. According to Conservation International, 11% of all global greenhouse gas emissions caused by humans are due to deforestation — equivalent to the emissions from all of the passenger vehicles on the planet. Furthermore, the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in our atmosphere, as of May 2020, is the highest it has been in human history.
What can we do?
We all agree that forests are playing an essential role in our life as well as in the furniture industry. Then, as furniture sellers what can we do to ensure the sustainability of the raw material of our products?
Think green
The Indonesian Ministry of Forestry has prioritized the issue of legal timber sources for furniture products to comply with the needs of the export market. Since September 2009, the Timber Legality Assurance System (TLAS) has provided legal certification for responsibly sourced timber used in furnishings, intending to promote good forest governance and to fight illegal logging. According to the Ministry of Trade, Indonesian timber and furniture exports to the European Union have increased in response to this agreement and are expected to increase by 50 percent over the next two years.
Sustainability, especially in raw material sourcing and manufacturing methods of the furniture products is now the new trend for Indonesian furniture manufacturers to increase our awareness of the health of the planet, as consumers both domestically and abroad seek environmentally friendly products. As a result, many Indonesian furniture and home décor manufacturers use reclaimed wood, and other sustainable materials to make a variety of furniture items such as sofas, tables, and chairs, and many of them even have a program in order to give back to nature by doing reforestation programs. Big furniture manufacturers in Indonesia are also thinking ‘green’ when it comes to appealing to local and international customers by investing in environmentally friendly products by using the minimal harmful chemical in the production process and many of them are FSC and SVLK certified that prove their commitment to reducing deforestation in Indonesia.
