MADE Hotel – New York City, USA
MADE Hotel is a reimagined urban retreat located in Manhattan’s vibrant NoMad district. Standing as a soulful alternative to the typical “corporate” New York hotel, MADE is a 108-room sanctuary that prioritizes community, craftsmanship, and the beauty of raw materials. It is a project that successfully balances the high-energy grit of New York City with a serene, global design sensibility.

The hotel targets a new generation of travelers who value “humble luxury”—an experience rooted in authenticity, tactile design, and inclusive social spaces.
Concept & Positioning
The project was developed around the philosophy of “Community-Centric Hospitality,” built on three core pillars:
-
Material Honesty: A commitment to using materials in their most natural state—raw concrete, hand-carved woods, and aged bronze.
-
Social Inclusivity: Designing public spaces that act as “neighborhood hubs,” inviting both locals and travelers to co-work, dine, and socialize.
-
Urban Zen: Creating a high-contrast environment where the interior acts as a soft, organic antidote to the hard-edged architecture of Manhattan.
Architectural & Interior Approach
Designed by the Los Angeles-based firm Studio MAI, the interiors of MADE Hotel are a celebration of “Bohemian Modernism.” The design team moved away from the cold glass-and-steel aesthetic common in NYC, opting instead for a rich, sensory palette.

-
The Material Palette: The rooms feature hand-selected Walnut wood platforms and custom-built integrated furniture. These are set against exposed concrete ceilings and hand-woven fabrics, creating a “crafted” feel rarely seen in hotel developments.
-
Spatial Efficiency: In true New York fashion, the rooms maximize a small footprint through clever verticality—utilizing custom bronze racking systems and fold-away desks to maintain a minimalist, clutter-free environment.
-
The Lighting Narrative: Floor-to-ceiling windows are paired with soft, warm-toned lighting to ensure the spaces feel cozy at night and flooded with natural light during the day, highlighting the textures of the raw materials.
Key Facilities
-
Good Behavior: A lush, plant-filled 18th-floor rooftop lounge offering panoramic views of the Empire State Building and a Tiki-inspired cocktail program.
-
Ferris: A signature restaurant that mirrors the hotel’s design philosophy, focusing on seasonal ingredients and “New American” cuisine in a communal, open-kitchen setting.
-
Paper: A street-level neighborhood coffee shop by day that transforms into a sophisticated wine and cocktail bar by night.
-
The Patio: An outdoor terrace located on the second floor, providing a rare private “green lung” for guests in the middle of the concrete jungle.
-
Lobby Bar: A carefully curated space designed for transitions—from morning espresso meetings to late-night social gatherings.
Project Significance
MADE Hotel has become a benchmark for “Human-Centric” boutique development. By moving away from standardized luxury and focusing on the tactile experience, it has proven that a hotel can be both high-design and approachable. It serves as a significant case study in how to build a successful brand around “design-led simplicity” and community integration in one of the world’s most competitive hospitality markets.
